Tattoo Taboo

While tattoos will always remain taboo to some, they have gone mainstream in American culture.  Tattoos are generally regarded as forms of individual expression and creativity. If you ask most people who have one, you will most likely hear there is a special meaning behind their tattoos.  It's not just a kid thing anymore, we see middle-class suburban women, doctors, lawyers, celebrities, rock stars and athletes with tattoos.

I was raised to believe that tattoos were only for indigents and criminals, so I have always been against them, until one day, when my husband said he really wanted one. What the heck, why not? We were both in our forties, successful and our kids were all grown up when we decided to go against our parents wishes and get tattoos. I have a tiny one on my wrist that holds a special place in my heart after my dad passed. My hubby started with one tattoo on his arm and it has now grown into a full sleeve. Tattoos are a big no-no in the corporate world, so as an executive,  his tattoos were placed where they can be hidden under his clothes.

What I didn't expect, was how quickly people can judge you based on the ink on your arm. My husband gets stares from seniors as though he's a freak, while the younger generation always ask him where he got his work done because they love it. Walking into Saks Fifth Avenue is always an experience when my hubby's tattoos are visible...the sales people are quick to judge and try to avoid us.

Little do they know how brilliant and gentle this man of mine is. Behind that tattooed arm, is a successful business executive, who dresses in a suit and tie during the day, while leading a team of corporate professionals.  That tattooed person, may be a doctor, a lawyer, or may be one of the greatest people you will ever meet. "You can't judge a book by it's cover" seems so cliche, but it's so true.

As for the sales people from Saks that were quick to judge us, I leave you with this quote from Julia Roberts in the movie Pretty Woman: "You are on commission right? Big mistake. Huge."

Thanks so much for reading! How do you feel about tattoos?

  2. Great post Monica. So many people lose out on enjoying life, enjoying people because of their preconcieved notions. I have several visible tattoos and am always humored by the reactions I get. Good topic!

  8. This is so true! My partner has a sleeve on his right arm, a full back piece and his chest. I do feel he gets stares sometimes, unnecessary stares. He is very nice and super empathetic and all I can think is not a one of those people deserve his empathy.

  9. I think it is artwork! I was addicted to InkMaster with Dave Navarro as host, while these artists competed for title There are so many genres and styles to tatooing, you really have to be quite skilled. I have wanted to get a side ( although ribs could be a painful spot) large cherry tree with some positive words on a few leaves, although that isnt going to happen, because with my connective tissue disease, it would cause me more pain and problems healing. It is a shame people have to be judgemental. You guys look so great together, and I love this red rose dress, so stunning!!!!

  10. It's a shame that some people have preconceived notions about tats. We are all nice people and ink on our skin does not change that. It's nice to hear how much you support your partners ink! Thanks so much for stopping by, Amber! xo

  11. I loved that show too! I'm sorry to hear about your tissue disease, but you are so sweet and so gorgeous, that I don't know how much more beauty ink would add to you! Thanks so much for stopping by, Jess! xo

  13. You look so gorgeous in that dress and I am drooling over the red heels!! I think "Why fit in when you can stand out?" It's a shame so many people judge, but if your hubby is happy with them that's all that matters. :)

  14. Oh man, for one thing I must say you don't look a day over 30! I am serious. When you said you were both in your forties and your family grown shocked me more than the tattoos. Personally I have 3 now {well not like your husbands} but for medical marking on me for my radiation. So now I can't say I haven't been tattooed. LOL

  15. Great post! I too use to judge tattoos. Though it's not a look for me, I find them interesting on others and was even inspired by a fellow bloggers tattoo of a butterfly. BTW, you and your hubby look great together.

  16. As a person with 4 tattoos, I really enjoyed reading this. It is a shame that some are quick to judge just because of another persons body art. I believe it's truly a way to express yourself. Period. You 2 look great together! :-)
